Changing How We Live
in the World
Our Story
Fireweed Learning Commons began in 2022, when a group of citizens in Sooke helped the municipality build a Climate Action Plan. From that process, we saw the need for something more: a place where people could come together to learn, imagine, and act on climate and community challenges.
So in 2022, a group of educators and community members formed Fireweed as a non-profit. Our focus is Southern Vancouver Island, but our vision is wider — building a culture of resilience, care, and regeneration wherever we are.
We’ve learned from the community that most people care deeply about climate change and worry about the future for younger generations. Many want to take meaningful action but feel overwhelmed or unsure where to start. And too often, fear of conflict keeps us from even talking about climate change with our neighbours.
But underneath the silence, we share a lot of the same hopes: clean water and good food, safe and affordable homes, meaningful work, and communities that care for each other.
Fireweed exists to make those conversations possible, to sort through what actions matter most, and to bring people together to build the thriving communities we all want.
